This Week's

Play on Word:

Jesus' Light

Dear Parent:

The goal of this week's lesson is to literally and figuratively let Jesus' light shine! Enjoy the lesson!  May you and your child see Jesus' light through the darkness.  May you both find your way in His Light.  Only then can His Light be shone for all others to see and praise His name!

Materials Needed: Bible, Flashlight, Bowl

Scripture Reference: Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Today's Script:

The bible is the best place to learn things, and it also can inspire the funnest playtimes!  Let's play today with the "Light" of this story.

Here, we have a flashlight.  What does a flashlight do?

(Let your child answer.)

A flashlight DOES shine light into the darkness.

Can you turn yours on?

Good job!  Let's go to a really dark place in our home and shine this light!  Should we go into a closet?  Let's do it!

Wow!  Look at how bright your light is!

(Exit the closet and return to your play area.)

If we were in the woods at night, could this flashlight help us find our way?  YES!

If the lights in our house weren't working, could this flashlight help us to see?  YES!

So, how is this flashlight a little bit like Jesus?

(Let your child answer.)

Well, a flashlight gives light, and Jesus gives light.

A flashlight helps us find our way in the darkness, and Jesus helps us find our way in the darkness!

A flashlight helps us to see, and Jesus helps us to see!

EXACTLY!

When we read the bible verses, what did they say about a bowl?  Do you remember?

Well, if we have a light or Jesus' light, the bible says that we shouldn't cover up the light or hide it under a bowl.

Let's work through this together.  Let's call our flashlight Jesus.  Look at how bright His light shines.  Very good!

Now, if we put a bowl over Jesus' light, that would be bad.

(Put the bowl over the flashlight.)

Oh no!  There's no light! People can't find their way in the darkness!  People can't see Jesus' light!

Let's take the bowl off right now!  The bible tells us to put Jesus' light on a stand to give light to everyone!  Let's hold your flashlight up real high for everyone to see!  Nice work!

The best part of this story is that Jesus' light can shine through us!  When people see us do good things, they will be more likely to see Jesus' light, feel His love, and Praise God.

I have an idea.  What if we took this flashlight with us everywhere we went today in order to remember that we have the power to shine Jesus' light?  Wouldn't that be fun?

So, if we go to the grocery today today, should we "shine Jesus' light"?  YES!

And, if we go to a friend's house today, should we "shine Jesus' light"?  YES!

I am so excited to shine Jesus' light with you all day, everyday!  Praise God!

Dearest Lord,
May the child and caregiver playing this lesson today truly grow closer to you and feel loved by you. May they see your light, enjoy its radiance, and let it help them shine, shine, shine! AMEN
